The Lottery by Beth Goobie

Everyone thinks of the lottery as being a good thing right? You buy a ticket, you win money, blah blah blah, you are rich. Well, the answer now is no. The lottery is not good. In "The Lottery" by Beth Goobie, Sal has the unfortunate job of being the school's lottery winner. But, she doesn't get any money.The Lottery winner in her school gets chosen every year, and for one year that person (the lottery winner) has to do tasks for the infamous Shadow Council (so infamous, teachers even knock before they enter the club room). But so what, a couple of tasks over the period of a year? Well, the person who is chosen as a lottery winner ultimately becomes the school outcast, losing every friend in threat of the Shadow Council. But, no one can stand up to them. So, after every period of the lottery winner is over, that person is accepted back by their friends, actually talked to, and just has to forget how their "friends" just happened to forget about them for a year. This may not be so bad for some people, but imagine talking to someone you don't know, and when they look at you, they acquire a stare of fear. Then they make an excuse to get away from you. well, to figure out how Sal gets through her year as the lottery winner you have to read "The Lottery" by Beth Goobie.

This book was very good, and I give it a five out of five. It keeps you wondering what Sal will have to do next, and if anyone will talk to her. I recommend this book to everyone.

"Stargirl" by Jerry Spinelli

Do you play a ukulele and sing to other students at lunch? Do you wear old fashioned clothes and keep a pet rat named Cinnamon? Well, you do if you are Stargirl Caraway. Stargirl is new in school, and everyone is talking about her. Leo Borlock is terrified the first time she looks straight at him, thinking she will come talk to him. Stargirl even sends Leo a valenitne on Valentines Day. Leo can't really get her out of his head, and one day follows her after school. Where does she go? She goes to the dessert, but he doesn't follow her any longer. He even walks to her house and hides behind their car. Then, Stargirl comes out and finds him. What does she say? Well, you have to read "Stargirl" by Jerry Spinelli to see what she says to Leo, and to find out if she can also capture his heart.

I give "Stargirl" five stars, because it's a great lesson. There probably aren't many people like Stargirl, who send you a card or do something nice for a person they don't even know. She is a very selfless person, who during the book was treated badly because no one knew her. They judged her before they knew her, even though she was a great person. I think overall it was a great book that I recommend to anybody and will read again.

"Kicked Out" by Beth Goobie

Kicked Out by Beth Goobie is about Dime, 15, going through a rough time with her parents so she moves in with her paralyzed brother, Darren. Her parents had a problem with everything that Dime did just because she wasn't the way they wanted her to be. She was the kind of girl who hangs out with 17 year old guys and dresses differently then most girls in highschool. Her parents make her curfew at nine o'clock. Her and her parents got into a fight one night because she was late and they told her that it's their house and their rules, and you'll obey them... and that's when she said make me. Everything changed in that moment. She was going through a hard time in her life. Nothing was going right. The boy she liked kept playing games with her head. He'd like her one day then the next him and his ex were back together. Will things get better for her? Will she get the boy to understand how much she really likes him? And will she move back in with her parents? I rate this book a three out of five.
